Le Guatemala n’est pas le plus grand pays d’Amérique centrale, mais il est le plus peuplé. Sa principale caractéristique, outre son relief particulièrement montagneux, tient à sa structure sociale, marquée par un fort taux de population indigène : environ 60%. Ce pays, comme le Salvador ou le Nicaragua, est essentiellement connu pour le conflit armé qui se déroula sur son territoire entre 1960 et 1996.
