International audience‘The Singularity of Reading’ explores the issues of creativity and influence in the art of the novel. The works of various writers are examined, such as Kafka, Philip Roth and Adam Thirlwell, for whom the process of fiction writing and reception challenge the notion of originality. Thus, the relationship between authors and literary traditions is investigated in order to emphasise the pivotal role played by the act of reading. As such, reading appears to be the cornerstone of literary creation, understood both as a guide for continuity and a driving impetus for appropriation and reivention.
