Les sédiments marins des sites de forage U1460 et U1461 recueillis pendant l’expédition IODP 356 constituent l’un des rares enregistrements au niveau du plateau australien Nord-Ouest. Ils fournissent des informations sur l’intensité de l’aridité en Australie pendant les principaux cycles glaciaires-interglaciaires du Quaternaire, en raison de leur proximité avec le continent.
