L'exposition in utero au diabète maternel aboutit à des changements cardiovasculaires permanents en lien avec des altérations de la fonction vasculaire. En effet, alors que le rat exposé in utero à l'hyperglycémie maternelle modérée (DMO) développe une hypertension artérielle à 6 mois, une altération spécifique de la vasodilatation induite par la prostacycline dans l'aorte est présente dès l’âge de 3 mois.
