Experiencing IPE: A Framework Integrating IPEC Standards in Multi-Disciplinary Education

Course Overview This workshop creates an immersive experience demonstrating the effectiveness using the IPEC framework with IPE-based activities and shares outcome measures for integration into respective educational curricula. A gap exists in health-science programs regarding the effects of IPE. Novel activities include a multi-disciplinary experience of an escape room, chart review, and simulation vignettes. After the workshop, attendees will have tools to build an IPE framework in their respective programs. Description of Content Interprofessional education (IPE) elicits better quality behaviors amongst team players promoting improved patient safety and patient outcomes. However, there is a gap in multi-disciplinary health-science academic and clinical education regarding the effects of IPE competencies through simulation and debriefing experiences. Using the IPEC Collaborative Practice Competency Domains of interprofessional team communication, roles and responsibilities, values and ethics, and teamwork and team-based practice, this hands-on workshop will create an immersive environment demonstrating the effectiveness of using IPE simulation-based activities. Attendees will experience an IPE academic framework that includes simulation, IPE chart review, unique educational/clinical activities, as well as provide examples of outcome measures/tools that can be applied and integrated into their respective educational curriculum. Novel workshop activities will take attendees through a multi-disciplinary escape room/scavenger hunt, conduct a team-based chart review of a complex patient, and collaborate on sample simulation vignettes. After the workshop and experiencing the IPE framework, attendees will have the tools to integrate this IPE educational framework to be modeled in their respective educational/clinical programs. Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to: 1) Evaluate two IPE-based activities that integrate IPEC Collaborative Practice Domains with multi-disciplinary colleagues. 2) Develop the skills necessary to implement IPE-based activities that will be utilized in their respective programs. 3) Design strategies to develop scaffolded learning activities with associated outcome measures that promote multi-disciplinary IPE for their respective programs
