Tulari se zbog povezanosti sa specifičnim uvjetima staništa i osjetljivosti na onečišćenje, smatraju ključnom bioindikatorskom skupinom na temelju koje su se brojne zemlje obavezale pratiti biološku kakvoću slatkovodnih ekosustava. Pouzdano i brzo određivanje do razine vrste pokazalo se izazovnom u taksonomiji. Fauna tulara u Hrvatskoj nepotpuno je istražena zbog malog broja specijaliziranih taksonoma i nedostatka morfološkog ključa za određivanje pojedinih svojti ženki i ličinki. U ovom radu korištena je metoda DNA barkodiranja, koja se pokazala kao brz i pouzdan alat za određivanje nepoznatih uzoraka svrstavanjem u poznatu vrstu ili skupinu srodnih vrsta kroz filogenetsku analizu.
