CORRELATION BETWEEN BODY MASS INDEKS AND FUNCTIONAL ABILITY OF PATIENTS WITH OSTEOARTHRITIS OF THE KNEE

Osteoartritis (OA) predstavlja jedno od najčešćih kroničnih stanja zglobova koje nastaje kada se hrskavica između zglobova ošteti što dovodi do boli, ukočenosti i/ili pojave otekline. Populacijska istraživanja odnosa debljine i osteoartritisa pokazala su kako se u pretilih osoba (posebice žena) znatno češće razvija osteoartritis i to najčešće zgloba koljena. Cilj istraživanja je ispitati odnos Indeksa tjelesne mase i funkcionalne sposobnosti osoba s osteoartritisom koljena. U istraživanju su sudjelovale 54 ispitanice iz Javne ustanove (JU) za medicinsku rehabilitaciju i banjsko liječenje – Lječilišta ″Reumal″, Fojnica koje imaju dijagnosticiran osteoartritis koljena. Za utvrđivanje funkcionalne sposobnosti korišten je Womac indeks (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index). Rezultati istraživanja pokazali su kako se povećanjem vrijednosti Indeksa tjelesne mase povećava i rezultat Womac indeksa i njegovih subskala, odnosno smanjuje se funkcionalna sposobnost osoba s osteoartritisom koljena. U skladu s dobivenim rezultatima, može se pretpostaviti kako uz sve veću prevalenciju pretilosti posljedično prijeti pojavnost sve većeg broja osoba s problemima lokomotornog sustava, posebice ozljeda koljena, pri čemu se nameće i potreba za pronalaženjem boljih terapeutskih i alternativnih metoda prevencije i liječenja.Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common chronic condition of the joints. It occurs when the cartilage or cushion between joints breaks down leading to pain, stiffness and swelling. Research on population which examined relationship between mass and osteoarthritis showed that osteoarthritis (specifically osteoarthritis of the knee) is more common in overweight people (especially women). The aim of this paper was to examine the relationship of Body Mass Index and functional ability of the people diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee. The sample consisted of 54 women, that have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee, from Javne ustanove (JU) za medicinsku rehabilitaciju i banjsko liječenje – Lječilišta ″Reumal″, Fojnica. Womac Index (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index) was used to determine functional ability. Results revealed that higher BMI score was tied to lower functional ability in people with oesteoarthritis of the knee. In accordance with the results it can be assumed that with higher prevalence of obesity comes higher number of people that have locomotor system problems, especially knee injuries, which leads to the need to find better therapeutic and alteranive methods of prevention and treatment
