Effect of the type of current used in GMAW welding on the scratch resistance of Fe-Cr-C deposits

Abrasive wear leads to high costs in industrialized countries, especially on extraction and processing industries of mineral and agriculture. The use of protective coatings in order to decrease its effects is widely used in these cases. However, protective coating quality is highly linked to the process used for its manufacture. The GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) welding process is widely applied for protective coatings deposition, resulting good deposition rate and facility of its use. The development of new welding sources capable of changing the shape of the electric current allowed the creation of two types of current: pulsed and double pulsed / pulsed thermal, both resulting in a greater control of metal deposition on the fusion pool. Aiming to analyze the influence of these new types of current on the wear resistance, this work consisted of the production of hard coating deposits with the GMAW welding process with conventional, pulsed and pulsed thermal current with the same welding energy, with a macrostructural, microstructural, mechanical characterization and the abrasive wear characteristics of the samples. Analysis of the abrasive wear was performed through a linear scratch test, and a morphological and tribological risk analysis was performed. It was observed that there was an influence of current type during manufacturing process at the macrostructure, microstructure and mechanics of the deposits, also, there was no phases alterations but on its deposit distribution. The results of the linear scratch test showed that there was no change in the coefficient of friction between the samples. As a consequence of the microstructural alteration, there was a morphology variation of the scratches and volume worn, and the pulsed current presented the best values of volume worn and the thermal pulsed current had the best risk morphology.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)O desgaste abrasivo gera um custo há países industrializados, atingindo mais efetivamente as indústrias de extração e processamento de minério e agricultura. A utilização de revestimentos protetores com objetivo de atenuar o seu efeito é amplamente empregada nestes casos. Todavia, a qualidade de um revestimento protetor está infimamente ligada ao processo utilizado para a sua fabricação. O processo de soldagem GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) é largamente aplicado para a deposição de revestimentos protetores, apresentando uma boa taxa de deposição e facilidade no seu uso. O desenvolvimento de novas fontes de soldagem capazes de alterar o formato da corrente elétrica permitiu a criação dois tipos de corrente, denominadas pulsada e duplamente pulsada/pulsada térmica, apresentando um maior controle da deposição do metal na poça de fusão. Com objetivo de analisar a influência desses novos tipos de corrente na resistência ao desgaste de depósitos protetores, esse trabalho consistiu na produção de depósitos de revestimento duro com o processo de soldagem GMAW com corrente convencional, pulsada e pulsada térmica com a mesma energia de soldagem. Uma caraterização macroestrutural, microestrutural, mecânica e de resistência ao desgaste abrasivo das amostras produzida foi realizada. A análise do desgaste abrasivo foi realizada através de ensaio de riscamento linear, sendo feita uma análise morfológica e tribológica dos riscos. Observou-se neste trabalho que houve influência do tipo da corrente no processo de fabricação na macroestrutura, microestrutura e mecânica dos depósitos, sendo que, não houve alteração dos tipos de fases e sim na distribuição destas no depósito. Os resultados do ensaio de riscamentro linear demonstraram que não houve alteração no coeficiente de atrito entre as amostras. Em consequência da alteração microestrutural ocorreu uma variação na morfologia dos riscos e volume desgastado, sendo que, a corrente pulsada apresentou os melhores valores de volume desgastados e a corrente pulsada térmica apresentou a melhor morfologia do risco, apresentando os menores pile-up e vales menos profundos
