Evaluation of extensive greenroofs over fiber cement roof for runoff retention and thermal performance

Fiber cement tiles are widely used in building coverings because of its low cost and ease of installation. This type of roof cover allows the transmission of external and internal temperatures, causing the building to fail to fulfill part of its shelter function and to provide thermal comfort.Moreover, fiber cement tiles contribute to the rapid runoff of rainwater, wich can contribute to flooding problems in cities.In this sense, the aim of this work was to compare different types of treatments on fiber cement roofsfromthe standpoint of rainwater retention and thermal efficiency. The experiments were performed under natural conditions in the municipality of Dois Vizinhos-PR. The research was carried out in field scale, with nine roof modules on a bench, subjected to three different treatments: exposed fiber cement roof, expanded clay on fiber cement roof, and extensive green roof over fiber cement tiles.The chosen vegetation was Grama Missioneira (Axonopus sp). Theexperiment design was completelyrandomized. The data were collected in 25 independent rain events. The temperature data were collected at 7 a.m., 12 a.m., and 6 p.m., in the autumn, winter and spring seasons by using a surface measurement thermometer. The green roofs retained about 70% of the total precipitation. On the other hand, the expanded clay retained about 30%, andthe fiber cement tiles retained about 6% of the total precipitation. With regard to thermal performance, the green roofs were the most efficient. Moreover, the external temperature on the green roofs showed less variationwith 27,2ºC. The highest external temperature variation was observed on the expanded clay treatmentwith 47,9ºC. In conclusion, the green roofs can be used as an alternative in reducing runoff and in increasing the thermal efficiency of buildings.As telhas de fibrocimento sãobastanteutilizadas nas coberturas das edificações devido ao seu baixo custo e facilidade de instalação. Este tipo de cobertura permite a transmissão de temperaturas externas e internas, fazendo com que o edifício não cumpra parte de sua função de abrigo e proporcione conforto térmico. Além disso, as telhas de fibrocimento favorecem para o escoamento rápido da água da chuva, o que pode contribuirproblemas de inundação nas cidades. Nesse sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar diferentes tipos de tratamentos em telhados de fibrocimento do ponto de vista da retenção de água da chuva e eficiência térmica. Os experimentos foram realizados em condições naturais no município de Dois Vizinhos-PR. A pesquisa foi realizada em escala de campo, com nove módulos de telhados sobre uma bancada, submetidas a três diferentestratamentos: telhado de fibrocimento exposto, telhado de fibrocimento com argila expandida e telhado verde extensivo sobre telha de fibrocimento. A vegetação escolhida foi a Grama Missioneira (Axonopus sp). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado. Os dados foram coletados em 25 eventos independentes de chuva. Os dados de temperatura foram coletados às 7h, 12h e 18h, no outono, inverno e primavera, obtidas por meio de um termômetro de medição superficial.A lâmina mediana total precipitada retida pelos telhados verdes foi de 70%, enquanto que a retenção mediana na argila expandida foi de 30% e das telhas de fibrocimento foi de 6%. Quanto ao desempenho térmico, as coberturas que demonstraram maior eficiência foram os telhados verdes, posteriormente a argila expandida. Em relação a variação de temperatura, a menor constatada foi a dos telhados verdes com 27,2ºC, seguidos pelas coberturas de fibrocimento com 39,8ºC. A argila expandida apresentou a maior variação de temperatura com 47,9ºC. Os telhados verdes podem ser utilizados como alternativa na redução do escoamento superficial e na eficiência térmica das edificações
