Characterization of sludge incorporation of refractory ceramic matrix water treatment plant: refractory behavior analysis

Water Treatment Plants (WTP) behave as industries, changing raw water into drinking water and producing significant quantities of residues and effluents as a result. The sludge from the cleaning of inclined plates and filters is classified as solid residue and it cannot be discarded in bodies of water. Furthermore, CONAMA’s resolution n° 430/2011 classifies this material as a pollutant, due to its chemical composition, which has direct relation with the coagulant used in the treatment, basically aluminum and iron compounds. However, this material has clay minerals and silts in its constitution that is approximated to clays, optimizing its incorporation to red ceramics products. Studies conclude the incorporation of up to 15%, in weight, of the sludge to the burnt red ceramics mass between 850ºC and 1050ºC did not provoke significant alterations in the mixtures, which still comply with the standard requirements. Other studies concluded additions up to 10% of sludge have few effects on the linear shrinkage for burning temperature up to 1000ºC, but there is an increase of water absorption with decrease of mechanical resistance. Due to these studies, adding the residues incorporation techniques, the objective is to value WTP sludge through its incorporation to the manufacture of refractory ceramics pieces. The raw materials have been collected in the state of Paraná, physically and chemically featured, mixed in different proportions and burned, looking for the formulation that presents the best relation between linear shrinkage, water absorption, mechanical resistance and thermal shock resistance and provides the appreciation of this residue in coating articles. The sludge incorporation into the ceramics matrix caused increasing of loss in the fire and of the absorption with decreasing of mechanical resistance. Regarding to the thermal properties there was not sludge negative influence in the mixture. Thereby, it was concluded that it is possible to incorporate up to 10% of sludge in the ceramics matrix without great mechanical damage.Estações de tratamento de água (ETA) comportam-se como industrias, transformando água bruta em água potável, e em consequência disso geram quantidades significativas de resíduos e efluentes. O lodo, oriundo da limpeza dos decantadores e filtros, é classificado como resíduo sólido e não pode ser descartado em corpos d’água. Além disso, a resolução CONAMA n° 430/2011 classifica este material como poluente, em função da sua composição química, a qual tem relação direta com o coagulante empregado no tratamento, basicamente compostos de alumínios e ferro. No entanto, esse material possui em sua constituição argilominerais e siltes o que o aproxima de argilas, potencializando sua incorporação em produtos de cerâmica vermelha. Estudos concluem que a incorporação de até 15% em peso, do lodo, na massa de cerâmica vermelha queimada entre 850°C a 1050°C, não provocou alterações significativas nas misturas, as quais, ainda atendem os requisitos da normatização. Outros concluíram que adições de até 10% de lodo, para temperaturas de queima de até 1000°C, pouco afetam a retração linear, porém há aumento de absorção de água com diminuição de resistência mecânica. Em função desses estudos, somando-se as técnicas de incorporação de resíduos, há o objetivo de valorizar o lodo de ETA através da sua incorporação na fabricação de peças de cerâmica refratárias. As matérias primas foram coletadas no Estado do Paraná, caracterizados fisicamente e quimicamente, misturados em diferentes proporções e queimadas, buscando-se a formulação que apresente melhor relação entre retração linear, absorção de água, resistência mecânica e resistência ao choque térmico e proporcione a valorização desse resíduo em peças para revestimento. A incorporação do lodo na matriz cerâmica provocou aumento da perda ao fogo e da absorção com diminuição da resistência mecânica. Em relação as propriedades térmicas não houve influência negativa do lodo na mistura e com isso conclui-se que é possível incorporar até 10% de lodo na matriz cerâmica sem grandes prejuízos mecânicos
