Growth mindset is a widespread approach to teaching mathematics in schools in which students are taught to believe intelligence is malleable and grows with effort as opposed to a fixed trait. Previous studies on theories on intelligence have used survey data to measure students\u27 mindset, yet student responses to survey questions may not always truly reflect their behaviors in the face of academic struggles. This study investigates the relationship between how students in a general education mathematics class talk about mindset and how they described behaving in these situations. Results suggest there is often a misalignment with the way students articulate their mindset and how they act in face of academic challenges
