This article is based on a qualitative empirical research conduced in three Canadian peni- tentiaries. Four significant dimensions of the relational economy in detention are analysed : the promotion of prisoners’ rights, the interrelation between active security, leadership and communicational order, the uses of «risk» in detention, and the prison’s privileges system. The coherence between these different dimensions rests on the concept of governmentaliza- tion. This concept allows us to capture the reconfiguration of power resulting from the « de- totalitarization» of prison.
