Veuves de gens de mer en Saintonge (xviie-xixe siècles)

International audienceOn the Atlantic coast, widows participated in most activities connected to the sea. We find them in the exploitation of the foreshore. The activities included harvesting, shellfish farming, working in fisheries that were largely open to women and the fish-locks of the Oléron, and harvesting oysters “with an iron hand” on the rocks along the coast. The widows of the coastal villages in Saintonge were both producers and businesswomen. It was at the head of transportation companies—from coastal navigation up to international trade—that these widows finally assumed the same roles and responsibilities as men in coastal Saintonge.Sur le littoral Atlantique, les veuves participent à la plupart des activités en lien avec la mer. On les retrouve dans l’exploitation de l’estran, depuis la cueillette jusqu’à la conchyliculture, en passant par les pêcheries, largement ouvertes aux actrices de la pêche aux écluses d’Oléron et des huîtres pêchées « à la main de fer » sur tous les rochers du littoral. Productrices, les veuves des villages du littoral saintongeais étaient aussi des femmes d’affaires. C’est à la tête d’entreprises de transport, depuis le cabotage jusqu’à l’échelle du commerce international, que ces veuves ont finalement assumé les mêmes fonctions et responsabilités que les hommes, en Saintonge maritime
