This includes altered Ca2+ homeostasis, reduced ATP production and increased ROS (reactive oxygen species) production. One of the secondary consequences of such deficiencies is the adaptive transcriptional responses of several mitochondrial- and nuclear-encoded genes involved in OXPHOS biogenesis.
