International audienceWith the relevance of birth-related practices coming under increasing scrutiny, we analyse the choice of a caesarean as a result of class relationships and the medical offering. Through a qualitative survey in a type-one private maternity ward for affluent clients practicing a high rate of caesarean births, this article explores occupational and class-related approaches that serve to assess caesarean supply and demand. It analysis the social conditions behind the possibility of a preference for caesarean births, on the part of women and obstetricians alike, and examines the procedures used by women when choosing a caesarean and the procedures of legitimisation used by obstetricians when caesareans are practiced outside...
