THE DEPICTION OF SOCIAL CLASS CONFLICT IN JANE AUSTEN'S NOVEL MANSFIELD PARK

Literature opens the world of events and situation that the students may not be experienced. One of the examples are novel or fiction. Fiction is the imagined creation of character and action for conveying a vision of life. As English Language learners, students should familiarize their self with literary work published by English author. Familiarizing with English literature provides the students with social and culture aspects of the language. Theses aspects could improve the students understanding of the language itself. Jane Austen is well known for her work in depicting the romantic lives of the middle-class English people. In Mansfield Park, Jane Austen described the clear illustration about social class happened in the England during 18th century. She wrote that social class determined the effect on someone’s life. Education, healthcare, and life expectancy. The lower social status someone has, the lower their life expectancy. Therefore, the researcher formulates two research problems : The social status conflict in Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park and the consideration in determining of social status. The study is a basic interpretative study. It provides descriptive data to understand the phenomenon in various ways. The data collection in this study is document analysis. The researcher employs text-oriented approach. Text-oriented approach is primarily concerned with question of the “materiality” of the texts. The main emphasis of this approach is on the internal textual aspect of the literary work. Finally, Jane Austen depicted three social statuses and there are six conflicts based on the social statuses. The social status are high social status, middle social status, and low social status. The conflict are the rights to study, difficulties in finding job, difficulties in getting married, difficulties in friendship, difficulties in expressing idea, and the limitation of wearing dress. Meanwhile, there are three considerations in determining the social statuses. They are aristocracy status, economy stability, and income
