Agricultural trade prospects for Turkey with Central and Eastern European countries and the Russian Federation

Symposium on World Agricultural Trade, at the Conference on Economics -- SEP, 1997 -- ANKARA, TURKEYWOS: 000078387800010This chapter analyzes three issues: (1) agricultural reforms in Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) and the Russian Federation (RF); (2) trade relations for these countries along with Turkey's trade prospects in selected agricultural products; and (3) future trade projections and prospects for Turkey. A discussion of the importance of trade relationships in these countries-as they face accession to the European Union (EU) and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)-is included. Although some countries, like Bulgaria and Romania, are still struggling with high inflation and other reform problems, CEEC and the RF overall have undertaken significant steps toward reforms in price and trade liberalization, elimination of support policies, privatization and land tenure. The trade data of selected agricultural products with CEEC and the RF show that Turkey has been a net exporter of vegetables, fruit and nuts, tea and mate, cotton and tobacco but a net importer of live animals, oil seeds and cereals. Baseline projections indicate that CEEC and the RF will continue to be net exporters of wheat, corn, beef, pork and poultry in addition to net importers of soybeans, soy meal, vegetables, fruit and nuts, and tobacco.Agr Econ Res Inst, Middle East Tech Univ, Turke
