A new whitefly species on vegetable fields in the east mediterranean region of Turkey: Silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia argentifolli Bellows and Perring (Homoptera:Aleyrodidae)

Doğu Akdeniz Bölgesi sebze ekim alanlarında Gümüşi yaprak beyazsineği, Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring ilk kez bu çalışma ile ortaya çıkarılmıştır. B. argentifoii'nin tanınması amacıyla yapılan morfolojik çalışmalarda, beyazsineklerin tür teşhisinde önemli bir yapı olan "Vasiform açıklığı"nın B. tabaci ile sıkı bir benzerlik gösterdiği belirlenmiştir. İki türün birbirinden ayrıldığı en belirgin morfolojik karakterler trachéal ve kaudal oluk olarak tespit edilmiş olup, bu yapıların B. argentifolii'de B. tabaci (M biyotip)'nin ancak yarısı kadar bir genişliğe sahip olduğu saptanmıştır. Trachéal oluğun genişliği B. argentifolii'de ortalama 21.5 $mu$m iken B. tabaci'de ise 51.3 $mu$m olarak tespit edilmiştir. Gümüşi yaprak beyazsineği ilk kez Eylül 1996 yılında Doğu Akdeniz Bölgesi Mersin ili sebze alanlarında ortaya çıkmış olup, 2000 yılının sonbahar aylannda ise bu il ve çevresinde hızla yayılarak zarar yaptığı gözlenmiştir. Zararlının özellikle kabak ekiliş alanlarında yüksek populasyonlar oluşturduğu ve bu bitkinin yapraklarında tipik olarak gümüşi renklenmeye neden olduğu belirlenmiştir. B. argentifoliînm bölgede sebzelerden kabağın yanı sıra fasulye, hıyar, domates, biber, turp, ve patlıcanda, pamuk ve turunçgillerde, süs bitkilerinden ise, Gerberia jamesonii, Euphorbia pulcherrima, E. milii var. splendens ve E. neriifolia'da zarar yaptığı tespit edilmiştir.A new whitefly species on vegetable fields in the east mediterranean region of Turkey: Silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) In the study, first time Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring (B. tabaci B biotype) was found on vegetable fields in the east Mediterranean area part of Turkey. In our morphological studies in order to descript B. argentifolii, vasiform orifice which is a important structure to distinguish the species of Betnisa which was determined to show similarity with B. tabaci M biotype. It was determined that trachéal and caudal folds were the most evident morphological character the two biotype of Bemisia. Trachéal folds in B. argentifolii are approximately half of the B. tabaci M biotype. It was found that mean of trachéal fold is 21.5 $mu$m in B. argentifolii, while for B. tabaci M biotype is 51.3 $mu$m. In 1996, B. argentifolii was first time observed on vegetable fields in Mersin which is located in the east Mediterranean area. However since autumn of 2000's, Silverleaf whitefly have rapidly become to spread all over the area. Particularly, reproducing populations of the pest were observed mainly on squash, and other vegetable hosts such as bean, cucumber, tomato, pepper, radish and eggplant, cotton and citrus, also some ornamental hosts such as Gerberia jamesonii, Euphorbia pulcherrima, E. milii var. splendens and E. neriifolia
