A new technique is proposed for developing refined element equations for structures for use in dynamic finite element analysis. The proposed technique makes it possible to eliminate the discrepancy which exists between element forces and the assumed deformation shape in conventional models. In the present study, the technique is applied to frame-type structures and the equations for a typical element of such structures are established. The technique is appraised by analyzing two sample dynamic problems by using the exact, new and conventional models and by comparing the results. It is found that the new model predicts the dynamic behavior of structures significantly better than the conventional models. © 1992 Academic Press Limited
