Knowledge about the local fauna and the consumption of wild animals by students of the 6th year of primary education in the rural area of the municipality of Tefé, Amazonas

O consumo de carne de caça é recorrente em todo o mundo e também na região amazônica. A educação ambiental, fundamentada no conhecimento da população sobre a problemática, é necessária para resolvê-lo. O objetivo desse estudo foi caracterizar o conhecimento dos alunos do 6º ano do Ensino Fundamental de escolas da zona rural do município de Tefé e sua possível influencia sobre o consumo da fauna local; como eles percebem a sua importância para o meio ambiente e os problemas relacionados ao seu consumo, suas preferências alimentares, além de identificar se existe algum tabu com relação ao consumo de algum tipo de carne. Foram aplicados 99 questionários em cinco escolas da área rural do município, entre os meses de Julho e Outubro do ano de 2015. Participaram do estudo 56 alunas e 43 alunos, com idade média de 12,8 anos. O conhecimento dos alunos com a fauna local é bem coerente com o que existe na área rural de Tefé. A maioria dos entrevistados entende que a fauna é importante para o meio ambiente e que o consumo de caça diminui as espécies que são retiradas da natureza com mais frequência. No entanto 47,4% declararam se alimentar de caça uma vez por mês ou mais de uma vez. Entre as carnes preferidas a de boi foi a mais citada, mas houve no geral um maior número de citações referentes à fauna silvestre. A rejeição por consumo de alguns tipos de animais, como cobra e porco, esteve mais relacionada ao paladar, às condições higiênicas e ao fato de a carne ser “reimosa”. Portanto, é necessária sensibilização ambiental sobre o problema do consumo da fauna entre os alunos da área rural, para que futuramente o abate de animais silvestres para o consumo diminua nas comunidades ribeirinhas do município de Tefé.The consumption of game meat is recurrent all over the world and also in the Amazon region. Environmental education, based on the knowledge of the population about the problem, is 4 necessary to solve it. The objective of this study was to characterize the knowledge of the 6th grade elementary school students in the rural area of the municipality of Tefé and its possible influence on the consumption of local fauna; how they perceive their importance to the environment and the problems related to their consumption, their food preferences, and to identify if there is any taboo regarding the consumption of some type of meat. Ninety-nine questionnaires were applied to five rural schools in the municipality between July and October of the year 2015. Participants were 56 girls and 43 boys, with a mean age of 12.8 years. The students' knowledge of the local fauna is very consistent with what exists in the rural area of Tefé. Most interviewees understand that wildlife is important to the environment and that game meat consumption decreases species that are most exploited. However, 47.4% reported eat wild animals once a month or in greater frequency. Among the preferred meats of ox was the most cited, but there were in general a greater number of quotations referring to the wild. The rejection by consumption of some types of animals, like snake and pig, was more related to the palate, hygienic conditions and to the fact that the meat is "reimosa". Therefore, it is necessary to raise environmental awareness about the problem of the consumption of fauna among students in the rural area, so that in the future the slaughtering of wild animals for consumption will decrease in the riverside communities of the municipality of Tefé
