This essay examines the ‘Toubert model’ for the Sabine Hills, and uses the evidence collected in excavations and surveys at San Vincenzo al Volturno to discuss the validity of the model for other monastic estates in Italy. The essential argument is that the Carolingians re-introduced the notion of social and economic planning to Lombard Italy, instigating far-reaching changes that the archaeology is only now beginning to illuminate.Hodges Richard.
