BACKGROUND: Poor oral health is a problem. A big problem. Some are calling it an emerging crisis in the United States (US) (Politico, 2019). There is strong evidence that a person cannot be truly healthy if they have poor oral health, yet the medical and dental professions are divided when it comes to the provision of care. For the most part the medical profession treats the patient as if they do not have a mouth, and the dental profession treats the patient as if they do not have a body.
