Studies have shown that the practice of formative assessment is a challenge for many teachers in South Africa. Teachers are either entrenched in their old habits and methods of assessment, or they have not been adequately trained and supported to apply formative assessment in the instructional process. The aim of this research was to explore Physical Sciences teachers’ perceptions of formative assessment and the usefulness of Concept Cartoons as a formative assessment instrument to assist teachers in their practice of formative assessment.
