The gender gap in the STEM enrollment: a loss of opportunities for the spanish society

RESUMEN: La igualdad de género en educación tiene un papel importante para el desarrollo social de un país. El hecho de que en la actualidad exista una alta participación femenina en estudios universitarios no implica que se esté dando una equidad en este tipo de formación, puesto que se observan diferencias según el sexo a la hora de escoger carrera profesional. Los trabajos con mayores tasas de empleo y mayores salarios son los que pertenecen a las denominadas titulaciones STEM, acrónimo de los términos Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas). Son esta modalidad de estudios los que presentan menor participación femenina, pudiendo ser debido a la presión a la que se ha visto sometida la mujer a lo largo de la historia por los estereotipos de género impuestos por la sociedad, viéndose avocada a dedicar su tiempo a las labores del hogar. Todo esto ha propiciado su falta de oportunidades para desarrollar sus capacidades intelectuales, lo cual conlleva que en la actualidad las mujeres y niñas carezcan de referentes femeninos STEM. El objetivo de este trabajo es realizar una aproximación al análisis de equidad entre hombres y mujeres en la matriculación en las ramas de ciencias y de ingeniería y arquitectura, que son las propias del ámbito STEM. Para ello se calculará un índice de equidad de género en la matriculación de las carreras STEM. La metodología utilizada se basa en el índice de equidad de género modificado (Fernández Sáez et al, 2013). El valor del índice calculado desvelará la inequidad existente y hacia qué sexo va dirigida. La línea temporal escogida va desde el curso 2008-2009 hasta el 2017-2018. El análisis agregado que proporciona el índice se completará con el cálculo de las brechas en las titulaciones STEM entre matriculados y matriculadas para el ultimo curso analizado.ABSTRACT: Gender equality in the education field has a lot of importance for the social development of a country. Having nowadays a high level of feminine participation in terms of university studies does not imply that an equity is being given in this kind of educational level, due to existing differences in the time of choosing a professional career whether talking of a man or a woman. The STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is the field that has more employment rates and higher. There is a minor number of women working in this type of careers, this can happen due to gender stereotypes given along history, when women were the ones working as housewives, being unable to develop their own intellectual capacities, alongside with having no feminine references at STEM field. The aim of this work is to approach the equity analysis between men and women in the branches of science, engineering and architecture, which compose the STEM field. To get to that point, an index of gender equality in the matriculation of the STEM degrees will be calculated. The methodology used is based on the modified gender equity index (Fernández Sáez et al, 2013). The index value will reveal the existent inequality and the sex where is directed. The chosen temporary line is the one between the academic year 2008-2009 until 2017-2018. The aggregated analysis given by the index will be completed with the calculation of the gaps in the STEM degrees, comparing enrolment fees for both men and women for the last academic year analysed.Grado en Economí
