ABSTRACT: This study analyses the knowledge and the traditional use of two species of American origin, which are gradually being forgotten in the Guatape Municipality (Antioquia, Colombia): Petaco bean, also known in Spanish as «vida» (Phaseolus coccineus) and the «maravilla» (Phaedranassa sp.). The article also evaluates their nutritional potential in the context of a peasant’s economy that has been radically altered and impacted on by the construction of the power plant «Hidroelectrica del Río Nare» in 1973.
