effect of arbustive mycorrhizal associations isolated from a desert environment in the growth of the bean Phaseolus vulgaris under water deficit

ABSTRACT: Arbustuve mycorrhizal fungi (HMA) increase the ability of plants to resist or tolerate stressful conditions such as those caused by nutrient deficiency, attack by pathogens, chemical contaminants, and water deficit. However, these fungi have different effects on plants that are regulated y the plant, the fungus and environmental conditions, so that although there is no specificity between symbionts fungi is essential to insure a beneficial symbiosis. In this study, we selected five sampling sites located in the upper Guajira of Colombian in the municipalities of Riocha and Maicao, considering the plant community and physical characteristics of the soils. The fungi were multiplied in sterile soil and a mixture of plant species (Allium cepa, Calendula officials, Lolium perenne y Phaseolus vulgaris) were used as plant traps. After 10 weeks of multiplication, two guilds were selected based on the content of propagules. We evaluated 6 treatments with 7 replicates per treatment: two guilds of HMA (G 3 and G 4) and a control without fungus (C) and two moisture conditions [water overwhelmed (AH) and without water burden (SAH)]. The effects of the guilds and the moisture condition on plant height, leaf area, leaf number, root dry weight, stem diameter of bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) and the percentage of mycorrhizal colonization (hyphae, vesicles, and arbuscules) were evaluated. When plants were maintained without hydric stress, the best guild was G 3 and for plants under hydric stress the best guild was G 4. Mycorrhizal fungi native to desert climate may be effective alternatives for use with crops exposed to drought conditions.RESUMEN: Los hongos micorrícicos arbusculares (HMA) aumentan la capacidad de las plantas para resistir o tolerar condiciones estresantes como las ocasionadas por la deficiencia de nutrientes, el ataque de patógenos, la presencia de contaminantes químicos y el déficit hídrico. Sin embargo, estos hongos tienen diferentes efectos sobre las plantas. Estos efectos, son regulados por la planta, las condiciones ambientales y el hongo, de tal manera, que aunque no existe especificidad entre los simbiontes, no todas las interacciones micorrícicas terminan siendo mutualistas, así, la búsqueda de hongos micorrícicos arbusculares infectivos y efectivos es primordial para una simbiosis benéfica. En este trabajo se seleccionaron cinco sitios de muestreo ubicados en la Alta Guajira colombiana, en los municipios de Riohacha y Maicao, considerando la comunidad de especies vegetales y las características físicas del suelo. Los hongos se multiplicaron en suelo estéril y una mezcla de especies vegetales (Phaseolus vulgaris, Calendula officinalis, Lolium perenne y Phaseolus vulgaris) usadas como plantas trampa. Después de 10 semanas de multiplicación se seleccionaron dos gremios en función del contenido de esporas. Se evaluaron 6 tratamientos con 7 repeticiones por tratamiento: dos gremios de HMA (G 3 y G 4) y un control sin hongo (C) y bajo dos condiciones de humedad: sin agobio hídrico (SAH) y con agobio hídrico (AH). Se evaluó el efecto de los gremios y la condición de humedad sobre la altura de la planta, área foliar, número de hojas, peso seco radical y diámetro del tallo de la planta de frijol (Phaseolus vulgaris) y el porcentaje de colonización micorrícica (hifas, vesículas y arbúsculos). Cuando las plantas se mantuvieron sin estrés hídrico el gremio que mejores resultados tuvo fue G 3 y para las plantas bajo agobio hídrico el mejor gremio fue G 4. Los hongos micorrícicos nativos de clima desértico pueden ser una alternativa efectiva para usarse en cultivos expuestos a condiciones de sequía
