Profit et travail de la terre, dans les campagnes florentines (XIe-XIIe siècles)

International audienceLand Profit and Work in the florentine Countryside (11th-12th Century)In the florentine territory, like in another parts of Tuscany, the greatest lords – counts, bishops, abbots, members of the cathedral chapters and their vassals – were far from exercising an exclusive control of the land. Those magni had to divide land profit with an important population of small or medium owners. What were the differences between the landowners and those who were working the land ? Who did perceive the land profits? If we want to give an answer to those questions, we have to understand the complex social stratification of those villages. Petty knights or wealthy rustici ? The way we might describe the medium landowners can have a strong impact in our vision of 11th and 12th century societies.Dans le territoire Florence, comme dans d'autres parties de la Toscane, les grands seigneurs – comtes, évêques, abbés, chapitres cathédraux et leurs vassaux – étaient loin d’exercer un contrôle exclusif sur la terre. Il leur fallait en effet partager les profits agricoles avec une importante population de petits ou moyens possesseurs fonciers. Il n'est pas aisé de savoir ce qui séparait ce milieu de propriétaires fonciers des travailleurs de la terre. Qui percevait les profits de la terre ? Qui la travaillait ? Il faut, pour répondre à ces questions, entrer dans la complexe stratification sociale de ces villages. Petits chevaliers ou rustres aisés ? L'idée qu'on se fait des propriétaires moyens est importante dans l'image générale qu'on voudra bien donner de la société des XIe et XIIe siècles
