Flint Mining and Cross-Channel Connections an outline for A Comparative Approach and Research Perspectives in Normandy and Soutern England

Cross-channel connections from the Neolithic to the Bronze AgeInternational audienceDiscoveries and research carried out in Normandy and the Southern England, since the 2000s, brings new information about the origin and the chronology of the flint mining phenomenon in North-Western Europe. This phenomenon is associated with other important manifestations, which characterize the Neolithic / Chalcolithic European transition period, including huge enclosures, flint mines, funerary monumentalism, etc. In Western Europe they show important socio-economic, technical and cultural changes in Neolithic society. Among them the intensive exploitation of lithic sources is an essential macroeconomic marker for archaeologists.For this paper we propose to cross the data relating to the mining phenomenon in Normandy on the one hand and in the South of England on the other hand. Normandy data has been increased in recent years by new excavations from preventive archeology. At the same time the south of England saw the realization of new university research and new radiocarbon dating. We think it's important to take an overview of this phenomenon on both sides of the Channel.From a comparative and relatively basic point of view, the first aim is to compare the exploited geological resources, which are sometimes very comparable in the two regions. It is of course necessary to correlate the geological and geographical location of known mines with the forms of extraction structures, and the technical processes of mining. The same comparative work can be extended to include production techniques: including the lithic technology, as it is possible to compare the realized products and their diffusion. By observing a second time, in which chronoculturally and environmentally the phenomenon develops on both sides of the Channel, we intend to enlighten this period of consolidation of the Neolithic model in our regions, and the modalities of the neolithization of Great Britain.Les découvertes et les recherches réalisées en Normandie et dans le sud de l'Angleterre, depuis les années 2000, apportent de nouvelles informations sur l'origine et la chronologie du phénomène des mines de silex en Europe du Nord-Ouest. Ce phénomène accompagne d'autres manifestations très importantes qui caractérisent la transition européenne Néolithique/Chalcolithique : enceintes, mines, monumentalisme funéraire, etc. Elles signalent en Europe de l'Ouest des transformations d'ordre socio-économique, technique et culturel au sein de la société Néolithique. Parmi elles l'exploitation intensive de ressources lithiques est un marqueur macroéconomique essentiel pour les archéologues.Pour cette communication nous proposons de croiser les données relatives au phénomène minier en Normandie d'une part et dans le sud de l'Angleterre d'autre part. La Normandie s'est enrichie ces dernières années de nouvelles données issues de l'archéologie préventive. Dans le même temps le sud de l'Angleterre voyait la réalisation de nouvelles recherches universitaires et de nouvelles datations. Il est important de porter une vue d'ensemble sur ce phénomène de chaque côté de la Manche.D'un point de vue strictement comparatif et de manière relativement basique, il s'agit dans un premier de comparer les ressources géologiques exploitées, qui sont parfois très comparables dans les deux régions. Il faut bien entendu corréler la répartition géologique et géographique des minières connues avec les formes des structures d'extraction, et à l'ensemble des procédés techniques de l'extraction minière. Un travail comparatif semblable doit être effectué sur les productions : grâce à la technologie lithique, il est possible de comparer les productions réalisées et leur diffusion. En observant, dans un second temps, dans quelle ambiance chronoculturelle le phénomène se développe de part et d'autre de la Manche, nous entendons contribuer à éclairer cette période de consolidation du modèle Néolithique dans nos régions, et les modalités de la néolithisation des îles britanniques
