In 1932, the Spanish republican government approved the Divorce Law in the context of new adjustments to marriage legislation in Spain, reinforcing the social and legal changes in the role of women that had emerged at the time. This measure, much like others that were approved during that time period, gave rise to social debate and mobilized the most conservative sectors of society, including the Catholic Church.
