El estrangulamiento del mercado de cereales en Castilla La Vieja y León, 1803-1805

The objective of the article is to demonstrate if the contraction of the grains` offer, due to reiterated bad harvests, may explain the strong price increase suffered in 1803 and 1804, or whether other factors were responsible. The conclusion is that the shortage and high price was the result of the ineffectiveness of the municipal grain stores and the bad function of the market, rather than the adverse agricultural situation. The market was restricted as the neighbours, under the protection of the councilors, impeded the extraction of grains and the Court applied pressure to the surplus production of both Castiles to supply Madrid and the armed forces.El objetivo del artículo es mostrar si la contracción de la oferta de cereales por reiteradas malas cosechas puede explicar la fuerte subida de los precios en 1803 y 1804 o influyeron otros factores. La conclusión es que la escasez y carestía fue el resultado, más que de la adversa coyuntura agraria, de la inoperancia de los pósitos y del mal funcionamiento del mercado. Este quedó estrangulado porque los vecinos, amparados por los concejales, impidieron la extracción de granos y por la presión de la corte sobre los excedentes de producción de ambas Castillas para surtir a Madrid y a las fuerzas armadas
