Abstract: Since the 1990s, a new line of research has developed that focuses on small-scale entrepreneurs in “ethnic” businesses established by different migrant groups in the United States and Europe. In the context of this line of discussion, the cases presented in this article illustrate that Mexico also had internal migrants who set up small-scale businesses that went on to become successful ventures. Internal migration to several cities in the country surged in the 1940s, and some migrants from rural areas began to develop specific, small-scale productive activities.
