Una historia de migrantes empresarios en México. 1940-1960

Abstract: Since the 1990s, a new line of research has developed that focuses on small-scale entrepreneurs in “ethnic” businesses established by different migrant groups in the United States and Europe. In the context of this line of discussion, the cases presented in this article illustrate that Mexico also had internal migrants who set up small-scale businesses that went on to become successful ventures. Internal migration to several cities in the country surged in the 1940s, and some migrants from rural areas began to develop specific, small-scale productive activities. In contrast to the vast majority of migrants, the individuals studied herein did not enter the wage-work sector; by far the field most widely-studied by researchers. Rather, in just a few years, they became prosperous businessmen who transformed not only their own lives but also the fate and trajectory of their home communities. Based on three well-documented historical cases, this article explores and discusses the structural, cultural and personal factors that made the viability of those businesses and entrepreneurs possible. The comparison of the three cases led to the proposal of the notion of ‘social franchise’ as an instrument for understanding the characteristics and dynamics of the business model that characterized this form of migrant entrepreneurship in Mexico.Resumen: En los últimos años se ha desarrollado una línea de investigación sobre los empresarios de pequeña escala en negocios establecidos por diferentes colectivos de migrantes en Estados Unidos y Europa. En esta línea de discusión, los ejemplos presentados en este artículo dan cuenta de que también en México hubo migrantes internos que iniciaron giros y negocios de pequeña escala que resultaron exitosos. Desde la década de 1940 se suscitó una migración interna hacia distintas ciudades del país, donde migrantes de origen rural empezaron a desarrollar actividades productivas de pequeña escala muy específicas. Fueron migrantes que no se convirtieron en trabajadores asalariados, como fue lo más generalizado y ha sido lo más estudiado. En pocos años, esos migrantes se convirtieron en prósperos empresarios que no sólo transformaron sus vidas sino el destino y la trayectoria de sus comunidades de origen. El artículo explora y discute, con base en tres casos históricos bien documentados, los factores estructurales, culturales y personales que hicieron posible la viabilidad de esos negocios y de esos empresarios. La comparación de los tres casos lleva a la propuesta de la noción de franquicia social para comprender las características y dinámica del modelo de negocios que caracteriza los emprendimientos de los migrantes empresarios en México
