Information technology has become a major sink for electrical energy at a global scale.As the costs for this energy has become a major driver of total-costs-of-ownership of ITequipment, significant efforts are being made to improve power and energy efficiency. In thistalk we will discuss basic aspects of power and energy efficiency in context of IT hardwaretechnology. We will present the status quo with focus on high-performance computing and analysemajor constraints resulting from the underlying technologies. On this basis we will review abroad set of strategies for improving energy efficiency. We will conclude with a discussionof the most promising steps forward
