This contribution focuses on different types of strategies for solving symbolic multi-digit subtractions. Concretely, it presents the subtraction-by-addition strategy as an efficient alternative to the direct subtraction strategy. The contribution starts with a description of the major characteristics of the subtraction-by-addition strategy and the direct subtraction strategy. Next, we discuss empirical evidence on the efficiency of the subtraction-by-addition strategy on different types of multi-digit subtractions. The contribution ends with concrete suggestions for mathematics education practices, in view of increased attention for the (efficient) subtraction-by-addition strategy.status: publishe
