In the historiography of urban planning in the twentieth century, there is little room for those who challenged the universalistic aspirations of the Modernist Movement by trying to safeguard tradition and cultural differences instead. One prominent such figure is the French urban theoretician Gaston Bardet (1907-1989). As an alternative to the planning doctrine of the Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne (CIAM), which he denounced for its reductionist, materialist and a-historical character, Bardet proposed a Nouvel urbanisme : built upon tradition, history and observation rather than theoretical premises, it was a form of urban planning that sought to contribute to the social and spiritual regeneration of postwar society.
