Communities on Papua New Guinea’s many small islands are acutely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to their limited land area, low lying elevations and almost total reliance on natural resources for subsistence and livelihoods. In New Ireland, the island communities from the Tigak and Tsoi Islands have utilized their mangrove areas for generations, with mangroves providing a source of building materials, fuel, food, income and coastal protection, as well as playing a key role as a habitat for fish and mud crabs. These communities have assessed the health of their mangroves and started to restore depleted areas so as to provide a sustainable resource for current and future generations
