This paper presents a brief history of post Second World War urban development in the United States as a background example with the objective of defining ways and exploring models for the re-introduction of nature into postindustrialized urban structures. Through observation and case studies, the authors discuss current applications of nature in urban settings. Drawing on theoretical constructs, a review of urban theories, architectural proposals, bio-inspired approaches, the framework of sustainability, personal projects and observation, an understanding of different stages of repurposed post-industrial environments is reached. A definition of this approach to urban re-development will provide a foundation for future applications
