A control strategy is developed for lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery energy storage system used in conjunction with renewable generation. The strategy is based on a developed dynamic model of Li-ion battery cell derived from electrochemical principles. The major degradation behaviors, that of the battery storage capacity fading and the increase of its internal resistance, are included. The model provides useful insights into the internal states of the battery, and is more complete in predicting the battery long-term performance and lifetime. An effective way to reduce the degradation rate is shown to be through adjusting the set-point of the state of the battery stored energy. The efficacy of this strategy is confirmed in simulation studies
