Professor Jan Łoś - the beginings and expansion of the Library of the Polish Studies Faculty at the Jagiellonian University in the years 1889-1929 : a reconnaisance

In the research on the history of the Library of the Faculty of Polish Studies at the Jagiellonian University, there appears the name of Professor Ignacy Chrzanowski as its only founder (1912) and patron. Whereas a fact which has been almost entirely forgotten are the merits of Professor Jan Łoś, associated with the extension of the book collection in the Cracow "Gołębnik". Consequently, the history of the Library of the Faculty of Polish Studies at the Jagiellonian University which has been presented here, takes into consideration the analysis of: 1. the hypotheses concerning the time of the creation of the Library at the turn of the 19th century; 2. the influence of the organizational and didactic activity of Professor Łoś on the development of the Library in the years 1902-1911; 3. the academic achievements of this scholar in the years 1912-1928; 4. the book collection donated to the Library after Professor J. Łoś’ death
