The National ITS Architecture creates the opportunity for interoperability across these diverse ITS deployments while preserving flexibility and choice for the many implementors. The architecture is implemented to achieve these benefits in three principal ways: (1) adaptation or development of consensus standards for transportation products based on architecture requirements, (2) development of regional architectures which interpret the national architecture and tailor it to support integrated regional ITS solutions, and (3) incremental deployment of architecture compatible systems
