A pavement design needs to be performed during the early phase of project development toestimate and establish the project cost. The performance life of the initial pavement design and associatedrehabilitations greatly impact the life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) used to determine the most cost-effective finalpavement design. Currently, due to lack of actual data, an assumption of the expected life of an asphalt pavement isoften being made. Thus, a precise initial pavement life span is essential for developing a reliable forecasting modeland an accurate LCCA.This study evaluated the performance of four roadway functional classes utilized by CDOT: interstates, principalarterials, minor arterials, and major collectors. Performance was evaluated with respect to smoothness, permanentdeformation, fatigue cracking, transverse cracking, and longitudinal cracking.ImplementationThe purpose of this study was to quantify the initial design life of a roadway\ue2\u20ac\u2122s pavement prior to rehabilitation andprovide specific performance information through the analysis of pavement management data and historicalexperience. The analyzed data may be used to estimate the initial life of a pavement which can be incorporated intothe LCCA within CDOT\ue2\u20ac\u2122s M-E Pavement Design Guide. It will also provide guidance to CDOT and subcontractorsin determining the cost-effectiveness of different pavement designs, construction and maintenance costs
