Numerical Simulation of Intelligent Compaction Technology for Construction Quality Control

Proof rolling using the intelligent compaction rollers after completing compaction can e\ufb00ectively identify the weak spots and signi\ufb01cantly improve the uniformity of the compacted layers. Despite many federal and state funded studies to implement the IC technology, there are still obstacles and gaps that need to be explored and overcome in order to fully employ this technology in the day-to-day operations. What is fundamentally missing from most e\ufb00orts is an attempt to understand the behavior of the IC roller responses and their correlations to the other modulus-based devices, such as the light-weight de\ufb02ectometer (LWD). To better understand the process of accepting compacted materials to ensure quality, performance and durability using IC technology, a \ufb01nite element model was developed to document and understand the theoretical limitations and sensitivity of this technology in order to develop more rigorous speci\ufb01cations. The in\ufb02uence depth for both IC and LWD was studied as well as the level of sensitivity of the sti\ufb00ness or modulus as measured by these instruments. The nonlinear constitutive model parameters seem to have signi\ufb01cant in\ufb02uence on the measured in\ufb02uence depth.96
