However,vehicle turning movement information is very time consuming to obtain and usually the datacan only be counted manually. Previous efforts were focused on solving the problem using anO-D matrix but the result is not accurate and reliable. Limitations with the existing methods tohandle shared-lane situations have prevented them from being used for many intersections.Motivated by the need to identify vehicle turning movements for many real time applicationswithout being constrained by the intersection configuration, the University of Akron\ue2\u20ac\u2122stransportation research group has developed an Automatic Turning Movement IdentificationSystem (ATMIS) and tested it through lab and field evaluation. The results from thoseexperiments are very encouraging with small errors compared with the ground truth. Thisproject has demonstrated the great potential of ATMIS to be used for other applications afterfurther testing and enhancement
