Performance based selection of RAP-RAS in asphalt mixtures.

The goal ofthe research study described in this report is to develop a strategy to select the type/quantity of recycledmaterial, and PG grade for the virgin binder, of an asphalt mix to provide optimum performance in agiven environment. This study compared the performance one mix design with five different quantitiesand combinations of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) using anAsphalt Mixture Performance Tester (AMPT). Three different PG graded binders were utilized.Based on the measurements of dynamic modulus and phase angles from the AMPT, it was concludedthat a high RAP mixture with a soft binder grade could perform similarly to a low RAP mixture with aharder binder grade. Mixtures using RAS have different performance characteristics than those usingRAP only. These mixtures were less susceptible to changes in loading frequency and temperature
