Research and Innovative Technology AdministrationUS Transportation CollectionBecause of its unique nature, self-consolidating concrete (SCC) has the potential to significantly reduce costs associated withtransportation-related infrastructure, benefiting both MoDOT and the residents of Missouri. SCC is a highly flowable, nonsegregatingconcrete that can be placed without any mechanical consolidation, and thus has the following advantages over conventional concrete:\ue2\u20ac\ua2decreased labor and equipment costs during concrete placement,\ue2\u20ac\ua2decreased potential for and costs to repair honeycombing and voids,\ue2\u20ac\ua2increased production rates of precast and cast-in-place elements, and\ue2\u20ac\ua2improved finish and appearance of cast and free concrete surfaces.However, concerns exist over the structural implications of SCC in cast-in-place and precast elements. Specifically, higher pastecontents, higher fines contents, and the use of smaller, rounded aggregates may significantly alter the creep, shrinkage, bond, andshear strength of SCC mixes as compared to traditional concrete mixes with the same compressive strength. These concerns increasefor mixtures that use untested aggregate types and various supplementary cementitious materials. Consequently, to achieve thebenefits and potential savings with SCC, guidelines are needed for its proper application in bridges, roadways, culverts, retainingwalls, and other transportation-related infrastructure components
