Federal Highway AdministrationUS Transportation CollectionDouble-ring infiltrometer tests were used to measure infiltration rates in situ at three sites in the Piedmont physiographic province and one site in the Coastal Plain physiographic province of Georgia. The accuracy of predicting saturated hydraulic conductivity for Piedmont soils from the published soil surveys of the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and the derived pedotransfer functions (PTF) was then investigated. The major findings of this study include: - Predicted values from the NRCS overestimated every measured value of in situ saturated hydraulic conductivity when compared to field values. - Predicted values from the ROSETTA pedotransfer software (primarily by soil grain size) more closely estimated the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the Piedmont soils. - The infiltrometer, which is known to work well in the sediments of the Coastal Plain, also performed well in the soils of the Piedmont physiographic province; however, care must be taken to ensure proper installation in soils in the Piedmont
