Federal Highway AdministrationUS Transportation CollectionData Interchange for Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (DIGGS) is an XML-based systemdeveloped under a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) State Pooled Funding Study led by theOhio Department of Transportation (ODOT) from 2005 to 2012. This system was developed to becomean industry-standard protocol for transmitting and storing geotechnical and geoenvironmentalinformation serving a wide range of public-sector institution and private-sector industry organizations.A standard geotechnical data transfer format allows data providers, be it field data collectors, testinglaboratories, or managers of data stored in a proprietary software, to efficiently serve stakeholders,including owners, regulators, engineering consultants, and the broader geotechnical community. Datafiles are produced in an open and consistent format that can then be readily imported, managed, andanalyzed by stakeholders who require the data for preparing geotechnical boring logs, laboratory testsummaries, performance monitoring instrumentation reports, and in situ testing profiles and reports. Astandardized open and consistent format, developed and managed by the geotechnical andgeoenvironmental community, lessens the burden on software developers and vendors who can nowwrite code to perform translations to and from a single data exchange format instead of providingsupport for multiple proprietary and often closed formats. The objectives of this project were tocomplete the Beta testing of DIGGS Version 2.0, create training and development tools for users, anddevelop a sustainable business plan
