For the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to assess options and monitorprogress toward achieving the goals of sustainable transportation it is essential that theunderlying sustainability-related goals and objectives be quantified and applied to project,corridor, and network levels for planning, operation, and maintenance.In recognition of this need, TxDOT sponsored research under project 0-5541 \u201cDevelopingSustainable Transportation Measures for TxDOT\u2019s Strategic Plan.\u201d The overall goal of thisproject was to develop sustainable transportation performance measures for TxDOT\u2019sstrategic goals and objectives as well as a framework for TxDOT to implement a sustainabletransportation system in Texas. The end result of this framework is a user-friendly analysistool developed in Microsoft Excel\uae to serve as a platform for evaluating the performancemeasures and combining them into a final sustainability index.This chapter serves as an introduction to the User\u2019s Manual for Sustainable TransportationPerformance Measures Calculator.
