Three experimental setups includeda bare Plexiglas flume, vertical cylinders, and natural substrate placed in the flume. It wasfound that substrate provides the most refuge for upstream swimming fish. Field testedresults of these experimental findings in Phase IIwill allow engineers to take advantage ofreduced velocity zones in retrofitted culvert design
