Engine Performance Improvement for the 378-Foot High Endurance Cutter

Methods for improving the performance of the main diesel enginesof the 378-foot Coast Guard High Endurance Cutter have been investgated.These engines are models FM3W8-l-/8 rated for 3600hp at90QrDM. Present engine performance was evaluated through questionnairesand interviews with cognizant Coast Guard personnel and visitsto selected cutters. In addition, operating records of the CoastGuard and Colt Industries were reviewed. Limited -engine testing wasperformed to verify data trends. We concluded that improvements inengine performance can be made by converting these engines to a newstyle turbocharger system, pistons, and injectors. Recommendationsare also made on methods to improve data taking in full-power trialsand engine trend analysis
