Enhancing GDOT\u2019s Computerized Pavement Condition Evaluation System for Pavement Condition Survey

Office of ResearchNTL-HIGHWAY/ROAD TRANSPORTATION-Pavement Management and PerformanceUS Transportation CollectionThe Computerized Pavement Condition Evaluation System (COPACES) is a software tool that has been used by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) for its statewide pavement condition survey since the late 1990s. The previous version was released in 2008, which ran on Windows XP laptops. To improve the productivity, this project developed a new version of COPACES (named COPACES for Tablet) that runs on tablet computers with Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 and fully utilizes the convenience of finger-touch-based operations. Because a tablet computer is not available for everyone at the current stage, the previous version of COPACES (named COPACES for Laptop) was upgraded to be compatible with the newer operating systems, i.e., Windows 7, 8.1, and 10. Two other programs, COPADQA and Upload, which are used for data quality checking and data uploading, were also upgraded to be compatible with the newer operating systems. To further improve the quality of field-collected data, several historical-data-based quality checking criteria were developed based on discussions with GDOT\u2019s pavement maintenance engineers and have been implemented in both COPACES for Tablet and COPACES for Laptop. The developed programs have been successfully implemented in GDOT to collect the COPACES data for the fiscal year 2017. Future development and further implementation considerations are discussed and recommended
